Human-Animal
Coexistence

Creating harmony between human communities and wildlife through sustainable coexistence solutions

Our Shared Planet

Earth is inhabited by approximately 8.7 million species, making it home to a profusion of living beings. Humans are notably the smartest and most intellectual of these species, giving us the responsibility and ability to maintain a balanced ecosystem where all kinds are safe and secure.

However, keeping this balance has been a substantial issue. This disparity has endangered up to 41,415 animal species while making up to 680 of them extinct. The imbalance has also led to negative externalities for humans, including land scarcity for the growing population.

Daily Conflicts in Sri Lanka

Every few days, Sri Lankan news reports mishaps between wildlife and locals, with elephants and crop destruction being the most common issue

The Root Cause

Unplanned Settlements

People have been shifted onto areas that have been occupied by elephants and other wildlife for generations, long before human settlements

Lost Food Sources

Main sources of nourishment and sustenance for elephants have been destroyed, forcing them to seek alternative food sources

Crop Destruction

Elephants turn to villagers' harvests for survival, causing destruction of crops that villagers solemnly depend on for their livelihood

The Tragic Consequences

Retaliation Against Wildlife

Villagers choose to strike back at elephants who are not the direct origin of the problem, leading to tragic consequences for these gentle giants.

Harmful methods used: Gunshots, elephant-crackers, and other pain-inflicting objects specially designed to harm elephants, often resulting in fatal wounds.

Blame Without Voice

Most of the time, the blame falls on the ones without a voice - the animals - while the real systemic issues remain unaddressed.

Beyond Elephants: The Bigger Picture

The rising adversity between elephants and people is only the tip of the iceberg. Conflicts are endless and affect multiple species across Sri Lanka.
