Wildlife officers in Sri Lanka have reported observations of homosexual behaviour among wild elephants, noting that male elephants frequently engage in same-sex bonding and mounting.
According to experts, these interactions are considered a natural part of elephant social behaviour. Such activity is most commonly documented in large gathering sites, including Minneriya and Kaudulla, particularly during months when food and water are plentiful.
Officials added that during mating seasons, male elephants often fight intensely to gain access to females, demonstrating physical strength and dominance. While stronger bulls usually secure mating opportunities, weaker males are more likely to be seen engaging in same-sex interactions.
Wildlife researchers stress that these behaviours, though sometimes surprising to the public, are not unusual in the animal kingdom. Similar patterns have been observed across many species, reflecting the complex social structures and emotional lives of elephants.
